Windows XP is probably still my favorite OS to this day. I have a few XP boxes that I use for playing older games on. Anyone else have any XP setups for getting their dose of retro gaming? Here is my main setup that I use. I just picked up the Trinitron CRT on ebay for $100 last week. I love it.
Lol I remember heaving to run dos to play games I can't remember how I used to do it d: how thing have changed, I am from ther area of tape and floppys, my first computer was a atari 65xe

Back in the later DoS days you could run programs from the DoSshell…. using a mouse!! High tech stuff! Earlier Dos you either had to run from command line or a gui program like direct access 5 which you could run on boot from the autoexec.bat …. bring back any memories? I think I still have that stuff on floppies! wow…. good times!!
Macintosh 660AV reporting in, we didn't have a windows PC until a Pentium 3 running win 98
RunDeckardRun the first computer we had was the atari 800 which my dad had I had a atari 2600 with the paddle controls then then the atari 65xe and my dad had the atari ste or stfm lol I can't remember whichever one, did ste have the s.t.e or ste had the stfm, his name is ste and I give thing's sentences to remember e.i. how to spell any (ants never yorn)
I still have a working laptop with windows 95 with a massive hard drive 4g. Windows 98 was amazing with being able to go back and forward through folders how we take the simple things forgranted p.s. i am not that old, always had a inside toilet and running water
My next setup to build is a win95/98 system for DOS. Question is do I go with 486 or something higher like a P2?
HouseOfBugs
Now I haven't heard them 2 for a will 486 and p2 not since ram was a £1 a mg (uk)
98 I thought was a pain…. constant reboots… Win 2000 was the revelation release due to ntfs. Save the pain and go with 2000
i was probably too young to assess how good/bad '98 was. all i remember is weekly disc defrags and diablo 2/starcraft on ye olde 56k
I have a dedicated Win XP image I run in a separate window to play a very long running Civ III game. (On a mac pro, running parallels).
That fact that Windows XP is retro makes me sad.
Tombstone
Yeah it is…I still love XP.
XP was awesome. And I still miss 98SE.
My first computer was a Sinclair ZX-80. Then I had an Atari 1040ST. Many, many computers since then.
I remember the Sinclair ZX-80. It was decent. My first was a TI 99-4a before moving into Commodores. Boy I hated cassette drives.
I still have my C64. That was "my" first computer, my grandmother gave it to me and it had some issue with display corruption so I had to learn how to fix t.
I still have a shelf in my old computer room that has my collection of compute magazines. the ones with a program in the back that you had to type in line for line.

Damn - now I feel old. I bought a C64 - new - as a teenager.
Thats not old. My first microcomputer looked like this:
Its a Scelbi 8008 from around 1975. Moved on to the Apple II a few years later and added a Z80 card in 1980. I have all this stuff somewhere in the basement. I should dig it out when I can find some time to spelunk.
